Fall 2010 - Pilgrim Journey
Join a small group!
SAVE THE DATE PILGRIM JOURNEY KICKOFF: Sun., Oct. 10, 3:00-7:00PM Retreat, Mass & Supper This Fall our small groups who study Scripture and share faith together will enter into a Pilgrim Journey, taking a look at their own journeys of faith toward God as well as the “Pilgrim People” of the Old and New Testament who continue to light the way for us today. “Pilgrim People” is a five-week Little Rock Scripture Study, complete with commentary, study guide, and weekly DVD lecture. Pilgrim People examines the Old and New Testaments to reveal how God’s call led people like Abraham and Sarah, Moses, Mary, and the disciples to identify themselves as pilgrims. As we read through their sacred stories, they unfold in a way that reminds us: we are not alone on our journeys. To start us on our Pilgrim Journey, the program kicks off on Sun., Oct. 10, with a mini retreat at St. Joe’s at 3PM in the afternoon.* Fr. Jim will facilitate this short retreat, inviting us all to explore where God is calling us to journey on our very personal pilgrimages of faith. It will be a time to spend in quiet reflection and prayer, followed by 5PM Mass, and a Dish to Pass Supper in the gym. RSVP now. This is the ideal time to join a small group for Bible study, faith sharing, and learning in the Catholic faith tradition. If you would like to join or start a new group, it’s very easy to get started. Contact Cathy Kamp, 586-8089 x.115. The annual cost per person for materials is a suggested donation of $30 and is collected when the small groups gather in the Fall. * Please note that this afternoon retreat at St. Joe’s replaces the previously scheduled overnight retreat for Oct. 8-9 at Notre Dame in Canandaigua.
From Lent 2010 - 40 Days of Spirituality: Gift of Prayer
Lent is a great time to experience faith-sharing and study in a small Christian community environment. This year we read and reflected on
The Gift of Prayer by Margaret Silf (2004: BlueBridge). The book offers a guided meditation, an opportunity to ponder what prayer really means to you and offers new ways to think about how you pray. Our prayer reflections were in the context of the Lenten scriptures and the ultimate question of discipleship:
Who is God calling me to be? Groups are provided with the Silf book as well as a workbook that includes questions for reflections and scripture commentary.
Email Cathy for more information.
Each week had a theme:
- What is Prayer?
- Why Would I Pray? Who Am I Praying To?
- When Can I Pray? Where Shall I Pray?
- How Do I Pray
- Does It Work?
To reflect on prayer on your own, download the 40 Days of Spirituality: Gift of Prayer workbook and read Margaret Silf's The Gift of Prayer. We have a few more copies of the Silf book in the office (586-8089 x.115) or you may purchase it online directly from the publisher.
The program wrapped up with a look at opportunities for individuals and groups to engage in parish justice activities, especially our expanded Bethany House Ministry. A DVD is in development that will be provided to small groups.
